Around 50 activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have been detained by the police from Kolkata's Bhowanipore area. According to reports, the saffron party workers, breaking up into small groups, were accumulating at Bhowanipore. They were planning to gherao the house of TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee.
Nearly half of the protestors were nabbed from outside the BJP's party office and the rest were caught in Bhowanipore. Some were traveling by bus while others were on motorbikes. The members of BJP Mahila Morcha arrived at Jadu Babu'r Bazar by metro.
The protest was planned against the gherao of Minister of Home Affairs (State) Nisith Pramanik's house by Trinamool. The gherao at the BJP leader's house was done after the fiery speech of Abhishek Banerjee who blamed the Home Ministry and the BSF for the shooting of a youth - Prem Kumar Barman - in Cooch Behar.
The TMC MP had said that the BJP had “disrespected the legacy of Panchanan Barma as the central forces shoot an innocent Rajbangshi”. Following his speech, the TMC supporters on February 19, organized a day-long sit-in protest outside Pramanik's house.
