Two children drowned while taking a bath in a river in Lakhnauri village of Banka district on Wednesday. The incident took place in the afternoon when the four children went to bathe in the Chandan river after their exams.
Two of them were unable to estimate the depth of the river. They realized the danger and called for help. The other two boys rushed to find the villagers to help their drowning friends.
Local divers pulled out the students, and they were taken to a local hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead. After getting the information, SDO Alok Kumar and other officers reached the spot. The police found the bodies and sent them for autopsy.
The deceased have been identified as Golu Kumar, son of Dayanand Jha, a resident of Lakhnauri village, and his cousin Rishabh Kumar Mishra, a resident of Sagarat in Katihar district. Rishab came to his aunt's house in Lakhnouri after the intermediate exams were over.
Family members said the children went for a walk on Wednesday, later they went to bathe in the Chandan river, where they drowned. Locals claimed that the incident occurred because the children strayed into a part of the river that had become a deep gorge due to sand mining. Police said they are investigating the incident.
