    BJP-backed AJSU party candidate Sunita Choudhary wins Ramgarh

    AJSU party candidate Sunita Choudhary on Thursday won the by-poll for Jharkhand's Ramgarh seat, defeating Congress-backed Bajrang Mahto by a margin of 21,970 votes, the Election Commission said.

    The AJSU party, which tied with the BJP in the bypoll, secured 1,15,669 votes, while the Congress, an ally of the JMM-led ruling coalition, got 93,699 votes after the counting was completed.

    The counting of votes for the Ramgarh Assembly by-election began at 8 am.

    Voter turnout in the elections held on February 27 was higher than 67.96 percent. Although 18 candidates, including 14 independents, contested, the fight was mainly between the Congress and the AJSU party.

    The by-election was necessitated by the disqualification of Congress legislator Mamta Devi following her conviction in a criminal case.
