In West Bengal, the Union Home Ministry has become tough on the allegation of filing fake cases against other leaders of the opposition including Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. In this regard, the Ministry of Home Affairs has written a letter to the Chief Secretary of the state seeking a report.
Union Home Secretary Mrityunjay Tripathi has sent this letter to West Bengal Chief Secretary H.K. Dwivedi. Leader of Opposition Shubhendu Adhikari had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention in this regard. The same letter was forwarded from the Prime Minister's Office to the Home Ministry, after which a report has been sought from the West Bengal government.
The letter sent to the West Bengal government said, "Since the issue raised in the letter pertains to the West Bengal government, it is requested that the matter be looked into appropriately and a report in the matter be submitted immediately."
The Ministry of Home Affairs has written to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, requesting him to appropriately look into the matter raised by Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, regarding "false and false allegations against opposition leaders and party workers by the Government of West Bengal"
Prior to this, Shubhendu Adhikari had approached the Calcutta High Court, in which the FIR was directed to be quashed. Subsequently, in December 2022, the High Court lodged 17 FIRs against Adhikari and restrained the state government from registering fresh cases against him. In July 2021 the officer alleged that cases were filed against him with false claims as part of a political vendetta.
In December 2022 the officer met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in his chamber in Parliament and it was learned that during the meeting with Shah, he handed over a list of 30 FIRs lodged against him at various police stations in the state.
Adhikari had also prayed in the writ petition for the transfer of criminal cases against him to the CBI for a fair investigation.
