Congress holds national satyagraha against Rahul Gandhi's disqualification

After Rahul Gandhi's exclusion from the Lok Sabha, the Indian National Congress (INC) will hold a day-long "Satyagraha" in front of Gandhi sculptures at all of its district and state offices on Sunday.

The Staygraha is expected to go until 5 pm.

The Satyagraha at Raj Ghat in New Delhi will be led by the national president of the Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge, and the party's general secretary, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

In response to a complaint from BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi, a Surat District Court sentenced the Congress leader to two years in prison for slander. He was convicted over his  “how come all thieves have Modi as their common surname” remarks.

The sentence was eventually postponed for 30 days so Rahul could file an appeal with a higher court, though. He was found guilty under Indian Penal Code Section 504 (provocation to provoke breach of peace) (IPC).

Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Wayanad, Kerala, resident who is a member of parliament made the comments while speaking at a rally in Kolar, Karnataka.

Gandhi was in the courtroom when the decision was made. “My intentions were not wrong. I speak against corruption,” the Congress leader told the court.

Rahul Gandhi further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken action against him because he is "scared" of his upcoming speech on the Adani issue in the House. In a panic, he further claimed that the "whole game" is being played to divert attention from the problem.

All Pradesh Congress Committees have been instructed to organize a one-day Satyagraha in front of Gandhi statues in all State and District Headquarters on Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM in order to express their displeasure with the situation.
