The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has rejected the new site proposed by the Bihar government for setting up the second Bihar All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Darbhanga district, terming the land as "unsuitable" and asking the state government to provide an alternative land for the project.
Rajesh Bhushan, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, wrote a letter to Chief Secretary, Government of Bihar, Pratyaya Amrita, citing several reasons why implementing the project at the proposed site would be difficult. HT has seen a copy of the letter dated 26
This is the second time the site for the project has run into problems. Earlier, the state government handed over 81 acres of land in the Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) campus after the state cabinet agreed to transfer 200 acres of DMCH land for the proposed AIIMS in November 2021.
However, during his visit to Darbhanga on 12 January 2023, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced that the project would be shifted to a more accessible location.
