Trinamool leaders Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O'Brien detained during Day 2 of Delhi protest
In a surprising turn of events during the India vs Nepal Asia Cup 2023 match at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir was captured on video displaying an obscene hand gesture towards fans who were chanting Virat Kohli's name. The incident occurred during a rain interruption in the match when Gambhir was seen walking through the stands. As he moved, a chorus of fans from the opposing stand erupted, repeatedly chanting Virat Kohli's name. In apparent frustration, Gambhir withdrew his right hand from his pocket and made the controversial gesture. Toward the end of the video, he continued walking alongside an individual holding an umbrella to shield him from the rain.
The video quickly went viral, prompting Gambhir to provide an explanation for his actions. He clarified that his gesture was provoked by Pakistan fans who had been chanting anti-India slogans.
