India's Aditya-L1 solar space observatory mission has started collecting scientific data with the activation of the STEPS instrument by Isro.
The STEPS instrument's sensors have begun measuring supra thermal and energetic ions and electrons at distances greater than 50,000km from Earth. STEPS (Supra Thermal & Energetic Particle Spectrometer) is a part of the Aditya Solar Wind Particle Experiment (ASPEX) payload and comprises six sensors, each observing in different directions and measuring supra-thermal and energetic ions.
The data collected during Earth's orbits helps scientists analyze the behavior of particles surrounding the Earth and the presence of Earth's magnetic field.
STEPS was activated on September 10 at a distance greater than 50,000 km from Earth and was developed by the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) with support from Isro Space Application Centre (SAC).
The data collected around L1 will provide insights into the origin, acceleration, and anisotropy of solar wind and space weather phenomena.
