The North East Express, bearing train number 12506 and en route from Anand Vihar to Kamakhya in Assam, met with a disastrous accident near the Raghunathpur railway station in Buxar district, Bihar, at 9:35 pm last night. In the horrifying derailment, five lives have been confirmed lost, while more than 70 passengers have sustained injuries.
Buxar District Magistrate Anshul Aggarwal confirmed four fatalities, with the police engaged in relief operations uncovering one additional body, bringing the death toll to five. Approximately 100 passengers were on the list of injured, as per eyewitness accounts. The exact cause of the accident remains unclear, although technical experts suspect a point failure might be responsible. Rail authorities have halted several trains on this route and diverted many others as rescue and relief efforts continue.
Authorities and railway personnel, including GM Anupam Sharma and DRM Jayant Kumar Chaudhary of Danapur Railway Division, have been tirelessly engaged in relief operations. NDRF-SDRF teams are en route to the scene, and alternative arrangements have been made to transport passengers to their intended destinations.
