The Centre, in a move to alleviate the burden of high wheat prices on consumers in the run-up to the Diwali festival, has formally introduced the sale of subsidised wheat under the brand name "Bharat Atta." This initiative aims to offer wheat at an affordable rate of Rs 27.50 per kilogram, significantly lower than the prevailing market prices, which range between Rs 36 to Rs 70 per kilogram based on quality and location.
The sale of 'Bharat Atta' will be facilitated through cooperative organizations such as NAFED, NCCF, and Kendriya Bhandar, utilizing 800 mobile vans and over 2,000 retail outlets spread across the country.Union Minister Piyush Goyal revealed that approximately 2.5 lakh tonnes of wheat will be allocated from the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and made available under the brand name "Bharat Atta."
Of this allocation, roughly one lakh tonnes will be offered to both Nafed and NCCF, with an additional 50,000 tonnes allocated to Kendriya Bhandar. In addition to subsidised wheat, the Centre is also providing Bharat Dal at Rs 60 per kilogram and onions at Rs 25 per kilogram through Kendriya Bhandar, NAFED, and NCCF, further aiming to provide relief to consumers facing rising food prices.
