Governor C V Ananda Bose has taken a significant step by naming the north gate of Raj Bhavan as the 'Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore' gate. While the south gate is typically used by the governor and other dignitaries, the north gate, being a primary entry and exit point is used by most officials and visitors, and will now bear the name of the iconic poet.
Additionally, Governor Bose has also sought a report from the Vice-Chancellor of Visva Bharati University regarding the proposed action to pay homage to Rabindranath Tagore on a new plaque. This plaque aims to commemorate the UNESCO World Heritage site status granted to the university.
In a statement, the Governor said "Gurudev Tagore (Rabindranath Tagore) is revered as the symbol of the cultural sublimity of Bengal, Bharat and the entire civilised world. Kaviguru should be honoured on the new plaque to be installed in VB Visva (Bharati University)."
Notably, days after Santiniketan got the UNESCO tag on September 17, three plaques commemorating the honour were erected in different parts of the Visva Bharati University campus with the names of PM Narendra Modi and former Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty. However, it did not contain the name of Tagore, the founder of Santiniketan and Visva Bharati. Later on Thursday, the Centre instructed the Visva Bharati University to replace the controversial plaques.
