In a significant blow to the Congress party's preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, former Member of Parliament Milind Deora (47) has decided to join the Shiv Sena, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Deora, hailing from a traditionally Congress-affiliated family, expressed dissatisfaction over not being nominated by the Congress to contest from the South Mumbai Lok Sabha constituency. The seat is currently held by Arvind Sawant of Shiv Sena, a veteran trade union leader who has been elected twice from the prestigious constituency. Uddhav Thackeray, the leader of Shiv Sena, is adamant about retaining the seat within the MVA alliance and not conceding it to the Congress.
Despite Milind Deora's move to Shiv Sena, there is no assurance that he will secure a ticket from his new political home. The BJP has also asserted its claim to the South Mumbai seat. In light of this, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has reportedly extended an offer of a Rajya Sabha seat to Milind Deora.
