Truck driver involved in Bihar accident rescued from mangled vehicle, arrested

A truck driver who plowed into a religious procession and killed at least eight people, including seven children, in Bihar's Vaishali district has been rescued from the mangled vehicle and arrested, a senior police officer said on Monday.

The driver, who lost control of the speeding vehicle on the Mahnar-Hajipur highway, has been admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and efforts are on to ascertain his identity, he said, adding that his condition is stable. After the accident took place in Hajipur on Sunday evening, local RJD MLA Mukesh Roushan, who reached the spot, claimed that 12 people were killed, but no official toll was announced by the police.

Speaking in an interview  on Monday, Vaishali Superintendent of Police (SP) Manish Kumar said, “A total of eight people, including seven children, were killed in the accident, while seven other seriously injured people are undergoing treatment at Nalanda Medic... "The driver was extricated from the damaged vehicle and arrested for careless and reckless driving. He is undergoing treatment at PMCH and his condition is stable," he said. The accident took place in Desri area, about 30 km from the state capital Patna, around 9:00 pm when some people had gathered in front of a roadside tree to offer prayers to the local deity Bhumiya Baba. The dead and wounded were in a procession that was brought out as part of a wedding custom. The wedding was planned a few days later in the nearby village of Sultanpur. The speeding truck was passing on the adjacent Mahnar-Hajipur highway and the driver lost control of the vehicle.

President Murmu expressed her condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured people.
