Defending champions France produced an attacking masterclass to open their FIFA World Cup on Tuesday 22 November. At the Al Janoub Stadium, France ran riot against Australia in their group stage to seal a 4-1 Group D win.

France fell into a 1-0 deficit inside the first 10 minutes of the match as they relied on the work rate of the Australians who were creative in possession on the day. Australia's Craig Goodwin struck in the far corner to shock the defending champions. France scored against the run of play in the 27th minute when Adrian Rabiot headed home a cross. The oldest French fighter in this World Cup – Olivier Giroud, showed his best results in a 10-minute streak where he scored one and missed two chances.

One would have hoped that Australia would carry their momentum into the second half of the match, but the quality of Mbappe, Griezmann, Dembele and Giroud became too much to handle. Mbappe found his feet and slipped through the Australian defense from the left side of the pitch. His cross into the box was converted by Giroud with a powerful header to equal Thiery Henry's record of 51. In the last 15 minutes of the match, Kylian Mbappe kept the pressure on with his movement as Australia were forced to make more saves. The Paris Saint-Germain star himself converted a header from Dembele's cross to get the start he needed after a controversial 2022 season.

On the day, France took almost 25 shots to Australia's four. Didier Deschamps' side showed clear signs that they are here as one of the favorites to win the World Cup despite a number of injuries in their camp in the build-up to the tournament.
