The violence at the Foxconn facility, which is the biggest iPhone manufacturing facility in the world, in Zhengou seemed to have stemmed from discontent over working conditions and compensation. A livestream video of the violence showed dozens of working at night shouting “defend our rights!” as they confronted a row of police officers and a police vehicle with flashing lights, reported by the media.

The report also mentioned that smoke bombs and tear gas were used during the confrontation, and some police vehicles may have been damaged during the ordeal. On Wednesday, Chinese authorities began censoring several Weibo posts, which began trending on Tuesday night with the hashtag “Foxconn Riots”. However, some text-based posts which spoke of large riots at the Foxconn facility remained live.

Foxconn’s Zhengou plant, which employs over 200,000 workers, has been in the headlines after since late October, when social media posts documented workers escaping from the plant, amid complaints over treatment of employees, especially those with Covid, and reports of insufficient food provisions.

The world’s biggest iPhone factory follows ‘closed-loop operations’— which involves employees living and working on plant site, mostly isolated from rest of the world. This isn't the first instance when strict Covid-19 restrictions in certain Chinese cities have led to dissent. The development comes at a time when big tech manufacturers such as Apple are looking to diversify their supply chains in a bid to decrease dependence on China.
