The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has requested a report from the Punjab government regarding the use of IVF technology, following the case of slain Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala's mother. The development stems from concerns over the IVF treatment received by Moosewala's mother, Charan Kaur.
Kaur, at the age of 58, underwent IVF treatment, resulting in the successful conception of a baby. The elderly couple welcomed a baby boy on March 18, nearly 22 months after Sidhu Moosewala's tragic death in Punjab.
In accordance with the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021, the Health Ministry pointed out that the age limit for women undergoing ART services is between 21 and 50 years. The ministry's letter to the Punjab government requests a report on the actions taken in this case, as per the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021.
Sidhu Moosewala, a prominent singer-rapper, was fatally shot in Punjab's Mansa district on May 29, 2022. Earlier in 2022, he had contested the Punjab Assembly elections on a Congress ticket from Mansa, albeit unsuccessfully.
Amidst the IVF treatment controversy, Moosewala's father, Balkaur Singh, has alleged harassment by the Punjab government. In a video message, Singh stated, "They are asking me to furnish documents of the baby. They are questioning me to prove that this child is legal."
