A youth named Raja was shot dead on Monday night in Kalna, East Burdwan district, police said today. Raja, originally from Chunchura in Hooghly district, had been living in Kalna for work.
According to police and local sources, Raja was at a shop in Madhuban near Kalna station around 10 pm on Monday, eating food inside the shop. Allegedly, miscreants attacked him during this time. The attackers suddenly entered the shop and fired bullets at Raja before he could react. Raja was shot in the head.
Local shopkeepers reported that after shooting Raja, the miscreants fled while firing in the air. Raja died on the spot, and the police arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the information.
Notably, Raja had been working at a tea stall owned by Kalna resident Swapan Manjhi for the past three months. The police believe that Raja was shot from a very close range. His body has been sent for post-mortem, and an investigation is underway.
