The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has put a stop to any excavation work on carriageways and footpaths in the city till 20th October. This decision has been taken because of the monsoon and then later the upcoming festivals.
Such works almost always lead to disruption for pedestrians, especially during monsoon as the soil and water mix and turn the road muckier. However, emergency works have been given an exemption.
Here's the notice from the KMC:
Considering the monsoon and puja festival, no agencies will be allowed to excavate carriage-ways & footpaths from 02/07/24 to 20/10/24 except for emergency situation like repairing of water-main, gas-main due to leakage, collapse of sewer and power failure due to cable fault and ongoing timebound ABD funded projects in added area.
However, in case of any extreme emergency or essential work separate approval should be obtained from Municipal Authority prior to disturb of any carriage-way & footpath during the above mentioned embargo period i.e. from 02/07/24 to 20/10/24.
