The Trinamool Congress has called for wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who participated in the Paris Olympics, to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, or to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha. This demand was made by Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, on his social media handle.
In his post, Abhishek Banerjee stated, "The GOVERNMENT and OPPOSITION should find a way to form a consensus and either award VINESH PHOGAT the BHARAT RATNA or nominate her to a PRESIDENT -NOMINATED RS SEAT, acknowledging the extraordinary mettle she has demonstrated. This is the least we can do for her, considering the immense struggle she has faced. No MEDAL can fully reflect her true METTLE .."
Vinesh Phogat recently announced her retirement from wrestling after being disqualified at the Paris Olympics due to failing the weight check before her final bout. Her career is decorated with multiple gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, a gold medal at the Asian Games, and two bronze medals at the World Championships.
