In a tragic incident early Monday morning, a helicopter crashed into the roof of the DoubleTree by the Hilton Hotel in Cairns, a well-known tourist destination in northern Australia. The accident, which occurred around 2 am local time (1600 GMT on Sunday), resulted in the death of the pilot and the evacuation of hundreds of hotel guests.
Queensland state police reported that emergency crews were immediately dispatched to the scene following the crash. The twin-engine helicopter collided with the hotel roof, sparking a fire that necessitated the evacuation of the building. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among those on the ground.
The police confirmed that forensic investigations are underway to formally identify the pilot, who was declared dead at the scene. The crash did not result in any other casualties, but the impact was severe enough to cause significant damage to the hotel.
