Jr doctors vs Mamata: Meeting over, press conference at Swasthya Bhawan to commence soon
The Calcutta High Court has ordered Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, to take an extended leave following the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor on the hospital's campus. This decision came after Dr. Ghosh was swiftly appointed as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC) just hours after he resigned from RG Kar Hospital.
The court expressed serious concerns over the rapid reappointment of Dr. Ghosh, questioning the ethics behind such a decision. "If the principal has stepped down owing to moral responsibility, it is rather serious that he is rewarded within 12 hours with another appointment. There is an apprehension that with lost time, something might go wrong," the court stated.
The High Court emphasized the role of the principal as the guardian of all doctors working under his administration, stating that if he fails to show empathy and responsibility, it raises significant concerns. The court remarked that Dr. Ghosh should be at home on extended leave, rather than holding another position of authority.
In addition, the court has requested the case diary by 1 pm in the ongoing investigation of the RG Kar rape and murder case. The post-mortem report of the trainee doctor revealed that she was subjected to "genital torture," highlighting the severity of the crime.
