Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his shock and outrage on Wednesday over the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata, emphasizing growing insecurity among the medical community and women nationwide. Gandhi criticized the handling of the case, questioning the safety measures in educational and medical institutions.
He highlighted the alarming nature of the incident and the attempts to protect the accused, which he believes reflect serious flaws in the hospital and local administration. Gandhi urged for a national dialogue to address the rising violence against women and called for serious discussions and concrete actions to tackle such issues, from Hathras to Kolkata.
Taking to X, Rahul said:
The entire country is shocked by the gruesome incident of rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. The way the layers of cruel and inhuman act done to her are being exposed, there is an atmosphere of insecurity among the doctors' community and women. The attempt to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim raises serious questions on the hospital and the local administration.
This incident has forced us to think that if doctors are not safe in a place like a medical college, then with what confidence should parents send their daughters outside to study? Why are even the strict laws made after the Nirbhaya case unsuccessful in preventing such crimes?
Every party, every section will have to take concrete measures by seriously discussing the continuously increasing incidents against women from Hathras to Unnao, and from Kathua to Kolkata. I stand with the victim's family in this unbearable pain. They should get justice at all costs and the culprits should be given such punishment that it is presented as an example in the society.
The case, which has sparked widespread protests, is now under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following an order by the Calcutta High Court.
