Ferry ghat owner suspected of poisoning 10 monkeys with pesticide-laced bananas
Chaos erupted at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday night, during the midnight hours of Independence Day, when a large crowd of men and women filled the streets. The situation escalated when a group of unidentified individuals attempted to break into the hospital's emergency department, creating panic and confusion. The police were called to the scene, but the identities of the vandals remain unclear.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with political and social groups announcing plans for protests and strikes across the state. The Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) has called for a 12-hour Bengal bandh on Friday, which is expected to bring the state to a standstill. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also announced statewide rallies to protest the incident and has urged citizens to keep their shops closed for two hours as a mark of protest.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has condemned the violence, will personally lead a rally from Moulali to Dorina Crossing on Friday. The back-to-back rallies and protests are likely to disrupt normal life in Bengal, particularly in Kolkata, as the city braces for a day of political demonstrations.
