Ferry ghat owner suspected of poisoning 10 monkeys with pesticide-laced bananas
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launched a series of raids on Sunday across Kolkata and nearby areas, targeting locations connected to the ongoing corruption probe at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The raids come just a day after the CBI registered a case related to financial irregularities at the hospital, where a trainee woman doctor was allegedly raped and murdered on August 9.
In a significant development, CBI teams reached the residence of former R G Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh in Beleghata early in the morning. Initially, the team faced resistance as no one answered the door for 20 minutes, but eventually, Ghosh, who had already been questioned for nine days in the rape-murder case, allowed them entry around 8:10 am.
Simultaneously, other CBI teams raided the house of Dr. Debashish Som, a forensic medicine expert at R G Kar Medical College, in Kestopur, as well as the residence of former medical superintendent cum vice-principal Sanjay Vashisth in Entally. Another team targeted the home of Biplab Singh, a medical supplier associated with the hospital, in Howrah.
The CBI took over the corruption investigation from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the West Bengal government, following the Calcutta High Court's directive. The high court had earlier handed over the investigation into the alleged rape and murder case to the CBI, citing dissatisfaction with the state police's progress.
