Kolkata bus owners seek relaxation of rules for 15-year-old buses, file petition in High Court
Just as West Bengal grapples with protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, another incident has come to light, sparking further unrest. A third-year student of Visva Bharati University, Anamika Singh, died under mysterious circumstances, leading to student protests across the campus.
Anamika Singh, a 22-year-old from Banaras, Uttar Pradesh, was a student of Shilp Sadan, residing in the Amrapali hostel near the university. On Teacher's Day, September 5, while a function was being held at Shilp Sadan, Anamika did not attend. Later, her health suddenly deteriorated, and hostel authorities rushed her to a local hospital. Due to her worsening condition, she was transferred to Bolpur Government Hospital, where she was declared dead.
The police from Shantiniketan police station have taken her body into custody for postmortem, while an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of death. The university administration is also looking into her last days, as reports suggest Anamika had been living alone for a long time and was known to be quiet.
Her death has raised serious concerns among students, who have been vocal about the circumstances, questioning whether Anamika was in distress and if her death could have been prevented.
The tragic incident has left a shadow over Visva Bharati University, with students demanding answers regarding the safety and mental well-being of students on campus. This new wave of protests adds to the ongoing turmoil after the RG Kar rape-murder case, further intensifying the public outrage in West Bengal.
