Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury is in critical condition and on respiratory support at AIIMS in Delhi, the party said on Tuesday. The 72-year-old leader is being treated for acute respiratory tract infection in the ICU.
A multi-disciplinary team of doctors is closely monitoring his health. "He is on respiratory support. His condition is critical at this time," CPI-M stated in an official release.
Yechury was admitted to AIIMS on August 19 for a pneumonia-like chest infection. The exact nature of his illness has not been disclosed, though earlier updates suggested his condition was stable and he was responding to treatment.
