Vandalism in Howrah over controversial painting during Durga Puja; 30 arrested
The Federation of West Bengal Truck Operators Association (WBTOA) has called for a 72-hour strike starting Wednesday at 6 am, demanding a ban on overloading and addressing other grievances. The strike is expected to disrupt the supply of essential commodities ahead of the festive season.
The association has stated that despite repeated pleas, overloading continues due to the involvement of some truckers and officials. The truckers also alleged that illegal payments of Rs 236 per truck are being demanded at weighbridges in districts like Birbhum and Coochbehar to allow overloading.
Additionally, truck operators claimed that low cargo volumes have pushed 3 lakh of the estimated 7 lakh trucks out of business in the state. They further accused police and land revenue officers of harassment in various districts.
