Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi took oath as the youngest Chief Minister of Delhi on Saturday in a ceremony held at the Raj Niwas. She succeeds Arvind Kejriwal, who resigned earlier this week, submitting his letter to Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena. Atishi also submitted a letter stating she was elected as the leader of the AAP Legislature Party.
Along with Atishi, five other newly appointed ministers — Saurabh Bharadwaj, Gopal Rai, Imran Hussain, Kailash Gahlot, and Mukesh Ahlawat — were sworn into the Delhi Cabinet. Atishi is expected to hold key portfolios, including finance, education, PWD, and power, according to AAP insiders.
While Kejriwal did not hold any portfolio during his tenure, AAP leaders have stated that Atishi will focus on governance and is expected to take a more active role in day-to-day administrative matters. Kejriwal, meanwhile, will concentrate on politics and upcoming election campaigns.
The swearing-in ceremony for Atishi was scheduled after Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor proposed September 21 for the event to the President and the Ministry of Home Affairs. Atishi’s appointment marks a significant moment in Delhi politics, with her taking the reins from Kejriwal as AAP looks to balance governance with electoral strategies.
