Ferry ghat owner suspected of poisoning 10 monkeys with pesticide-laced bananas
Haji Nurul Islam, the Trinamool Congress MP from Basirhat, passed away at the age of 61 on Wednesday. He had been suffering from liver cancer for a long time and took his last breath at his home in the afternoon. His health deteriorated significantly in the morning, and a team of doctors rushed to his residence. According to close sources, they were unable to detect his heartbeat or pulse by the time they arrived.
Haji Nurul Islam entered politics in 2009 when he was first elected as the Trinamool Congress MP from Basirhat. Despite a defeat in the 2014 elections in Jangipur, he continued to play an active role in the party. In 2016, the Trinamool Congress nominated him for the Haroa Assembly seat, which he won, becoming an MLA. He was re-elected in 2021 from the same seat.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Haji Nurul contested from the Basirhat constituency once again, defeating BJP's Rekha Patra. His candidacy came at a challenging time for the party, as it faced allegations related to the Sandeshkhali incident, but Trinamool trusted the veteran politician to lead.
Due to his ongoing health issues, Haji Nurul was hospitalized multiple times during the election period and was not heavily involved in the campaign. Sadly, he passed away at home after his long battle with illness.
