5 dead, over a 100 hospitalized at an IAF airshow in Chennai

At the Indian Air Force (IAF) airshow held at Marina Beach in Chennai, five spectators lost their lives, and over 90 were hospitalized due to heat-related issues and dehydration. The airshow attracted an estimated 1.5 million attendees, with families arriving as early as 8 AM to secure prime viewing spots. Despite the excitement surrounding the event, high temperatures reaching 36 degrees Celsius, coupled with significant overcrowding, led to dire consequences for many attendees.

Witnesses reported a severe lack of water and medical assistance available at the venue. While the airshow commenced at 11 AM and lasted until 1 PM, attendees faced extreme discomfort as they battled the heat and overwhelming crowds. Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian acknowledged the tragic situation, stating that the state had deployed medical teams, ambulances, and prepared beds for emergencies. However, he faced criticism from opposition leaders, who labeled the state government's efforts as insufficient and claimed that the administration had failed to ensure the safety and well-being of attendees.

Former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami condemned the DMK government for its mismanagement, emphasizing that the deaths were preventable and blaming the administration for not providing adequate facilities. Other opposition leaders echoed these sentiments, asserting that the government's negligence contributed to the tragic outcomes. Reports indicate that many attendees experienced dehydration symptoms, and over 150 individuals received first aid for related issues. Fatalities occurred not only at the event site but also during attendees' journeys home.

Experts have highlighted the need for improved strategies to manage heat exposure during large public events, particularly in hot and humid climates like Chennai. Recommendations include increasing the availability of hydration stations, ensuring shaded areas for attendees, and promoting awareness about the risks of heat-related illnesses. The airshow, which returned to Chennai after 21 years, was meant to showcase the aerial prowess of the IAF.
