60 doctors resign from Kolkata's medical colleges in solidarity with junior doctors on hunger strike

On Wednesday, at least 60 doctors from Kolkata's medical colleges resigned in a show of solidarity with junior doctors who have been on a hunger strike for justice. This mass resignation follows 50 senior doctors from RG Kar Medical College resigning the previous day.

The resignations stem from deep concerns over the safety of medical professionals after a woman doctor was allegedly raped and murdered in August. The senior doctors at RG Kar made their decision during a meeting of department heads, emphasizing the urgent need for government action.

Seven junior doctors in Dharmatala have entered their fifth day of a "fast-unto-death" hunger strike, with their health rapidly deteriorating. Additionally, junior doctors across West Bengal are holding a symbolic 12-hour fast in solidarity with their peers.

The discontent is spreading beyond Kolkata, with two junior doctors from Coochbehar Medical College also participating in a hunger strike for the third consecutive day. This unrest highlights a potential wave of resignations from other medical institutions as senior doctors rally behind their junior colleagues.

Key resignations include Doctors Snigdha Hazra, Tanaya Panja, and Anustup Mukhopadhyay from Kolkata's medical colleges, alongside Arnab Mukhopadhyay from SSKM, Pulastha Acharya from NRS Medical College, and Sayantani Ghosh Hazra from KPC Medical College.
