Air India Express Flight IX 613, operating from Tiruchirapalli to Sharjah, experienced a critical hydraulic failure shortly after takeoff on Friday evening, putting the lives of 141 passengers at risk. The incident unfolded when pilots Iqrom Rifadly Fahmi Zainal and co-pilot Maitryee Shrikrishna Shitole detected issues with the aircraft's landing gear. Recognizing the potential danger, they made the crucial decision to stay airborne for approximately two hours to burn off excess fuel, which helped mitigate the risk of an overweight landing that could have further compromised the landing gear.
The flight successfully returned to Tiruchirapalli Airport, landing safely at 8:15 PM IST. This was a commendable feat, considering the serious nature of the malfunction. Chief Minister MK Stalin lauded the crew for their swift and professional handling of the emergency situation, stating that their actions undoubtedly saved lives. He ordered an immediate deployment of emergency services, including over 20 ambulances and fire tenders, to provide medical assistance to passengers upon landing.
Governor R.N. Ravi also expressed gratitude to the pilots and crew, highlighting their professionalism and calmness during such a tense moment. He shared his appreciation on social media, stating, "The courage and calm professionalism of the cockpit and cabin crew truly shone during this trying and tense moment."
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a thorough investigation into the cause of the hydraulic failure. An Air India Express spokesperson confirmed that no pre-flight technical issues were flagged by the operating crew before departure. As a precaution, the DGCA will examine the aircraft to ascertain what led to the malfunction. In the interim, Air India Express is arranging an alternative flight for affected passengers to ensure they reach their intended destination.
Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu praised the emergency response teams for their prompt action when the issue was detected at 6:05 PM. He emphasized that all safety protocols were followed, ensuring the well-being of every passenger during the emergency. The swift coordination of airport emergency teams contributed significantly to the successful outcome of the incident. Air India Express has expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers and is committed to providing all necessary support for their onward journey.
