The Kolkata Police has extended the ban on public gatherings around RG Kar Medical College and Hospital until October 30 to prevent potential unrest. This decision, taken by Police Commissioner Manoj Verma, was announced late on Tuesday. The new order enforces restrictions under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code (formerly Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure), prohibiting the assembly of five or more people in designated areas from October 16 to October 30.
The areas affected by this order fall under Shyampukur, Ultadanga, and Tala police stations. Key locations include Belgachia Road, JK Mitra Road Crossing, and the Shyambazar Five Point Crossing. The police have deployed additional personnel in these areas to ensure strict adherence to the order and maintain law and order.
This preventive measure follows the violent events of August 14 during the “Reclaim The Night” protest. The protest, which was organized in response to the rape and murder of a female doctor from RG Kar Medical College, turned violent when protestors broke into the hospital and caused significant damage. Accusations of police inaction during the incident led to criticism, though several arrests were made later.
To avoid a repeat of such violence, the police have heightened security around the hospital. The deployment of additional forces, along with the ban on gatherings, is aimed at ensuring peace in the area. The police are also closely monitoring the situation to prevent any unauthorized assembly that could escalate tensions.
