On Lakshmi Puja day, Bamcharon Mete, a 45-year-old wage labourer from Dangapara in Burdwan district, experienced a miraculous transformation in his fortunes after winning ₹1 crore in a local lottery. His day began with a mission to purchase fertilizer for a small plot of land he had cultivated, which is crucial for his agricultural livelihood.
However, upon reaching the local market, Mete discovered that the fertilizer shop was closed in observance of Lakshmi Puja, a festival celebrated with great enthusiasm in the region. Feeling frustrated and at a loss, he decided to divert his disappointment by buying two daily lottery tickets, spending ₹60 of the ₹100 his wife, Kadam, had given him. “I was upset about not getting the fertilizer and just wanted to try my luck,” he recalled.
After returning home, Mete’s wife scolded him for what she considered a waste of money on lottery tickets instead of essential supplies. Unfazed, Mete casually checked the lottery results on his cellphone during lunch. To his astonishment, he discovered that the number on his ticket matched the first prize winner. “At first, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I checked it multiple times,” he said. When he broke the news to Kadam, she thought he was joking, illustrating the disbelief that often accompanies such unexpected windfalls.
Recognizing the potential risks of being targeted for his winning ticket, Mete immediately called his nephew for assistance. Concerned about theft or fraud, the duo hurried to the Ausgram Police Outpost, seeking refuge. Police officials confirmed that both Mete and his nephew were given shelter for security reasons, ensuring that the prized ticket remained protected. “This win gives me hope for a better future for my family,” Mete stated, highlighting the profound impact of his good fortune.
