Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for a new terminal at Bagdogra Airport on Sunday. This significant event will be conducted virtually from the Kawakhali ground near Siliguri, underscoring the government's commitment to enhancing infrastructure in North Bengal.
The new terminal project involves an investment of approximately ₹1540 crore, aimed at modernizing the airport to cater to growing passenger traffic. Spanning an impressive 70,400 square meters, the terminal is designed to incorporate advanced technologies and facilities. These enhancements include increased check-in counters, spacious waiting areas, and improved baggage handling systems, all aimed at providing a seamless travel experience for passengers.
Darjeeling MP Raju Bist visited the site on Saturday, expressing optimism about the project. He highlighted that the new terminal is not only a vital step for Siliguri but also a transformative development for the entire region. The improved infrastructure is expected to significantly boost tourism, which is a key economic driver for North Bengal. Enhanced connectivity will make it easier for tourists to access popular destinations such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Gangtok.
The new terminal will also facilitate better air connectivity for neighboring states, making it a crucial hub for travel in Eastern India. This is particularly significant for trade and commerce, as improved air transport will foster business opportunities and strengthen economic ties across the region.
The inauguration event will include participation from BJP MPs, MLAs, and local leaders, reflecting a united political front in support of this initiative. This project aligns with the government's broader vision of promoting regional development through infrastructure upgrades and enhanced connectivity.
