Pune police are actively investigating a threatening email received by a prominent local jeweller, allegedly sent by members of the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The email demands an extortion amount of Rs 10 crore, raising alarm within the business community. Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma confirmed that the jeweller reported the threat approximately four or five days ago. The police are currently working to verify the email's details and its source before a formal case can be registered.
According to sources, the threatening email claimed to be from the Bishnoi gang, which has been linked to a series of criminal activities, including extortion and violence. While the police have not disclosed the identity of the jeweller for safety reasons, Sharma emphasized that the individual is a well-known figure in Pune's jewellery market. The police are treating this matter with urgency, as the threat could potentially impact the safety of business owners in the area.
The email has been referred to the cybercrime unit for further investigation. Senior Inspector Suresh Shinde stated that they are conducting a thorough technical analysis of the email to determine its authenticity and establish any direct connections to the Bishnoi gang. The police are also exploring any potential patterns or similar threats against other local businesses.
Lawrence Bishnoi, currently detained in a Gujarat jail, is under investigation for his suspected involvement in the October 12 murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique in Mumbai. Following this high-profile murder, nine suspects were arrested, with some claiming ties to the Bishnoi gang. This development has intensified scrutiny on the gang's activities and their influence in Maharashtra. As investigations continue, authorities are urging the public and local business owners to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or communications that could relate to extortion attempts.
