TMC announces candidate list for upcoming bye-elections | Check List

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has announced its candidate lineup for the upcoming bye-elections in West Bengal, scheduled for November 13, 2024. Six assembly constituencies will see new candidates take the stage as the former MLAs from these seats vacated their positions after being elected to the Lok Sabha in the 2024 general elections.

As per the official list, Sangita Roy has been fielded to contest from Sitai in Cooch Behar district, while Jay Prakash Toppo will represent the party in the Madarihat seat in Alipurduar district. Falguni Singhababu is set to contest for the Taldangra seat in the Bankura district, and Sujoy Hazra will stand for the Medinipur seat in the West Midnapore district. In North 24 Parganas, Sk. Rabiul Islam has been chosen for the Haroa seat, while Sanat Dey will represent Trinamool in the Naihati constituency.

The bye-elections became necessary as several former MLAs from these constituencies have been elected to the Lok Sabha in 2024. For instance, Manoj Tigga, former BJP MLA from Madarihat, is now the MP for Alipurduar, while Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia, previously the TMC MLA from Sitai, is now representing Cooch Behar in the Lok Sabha.

Similarly, Partha Bhowmik, who formerly represented Naihati in the assembly, has been elected as the MP for Barrackpore. Additionally, Late Haji Nurul Islam, who was the MLA for Haroa, is now the MP for Basirhat. In Medinipur, June Malia, the actress-turned-politician who won the assembly seat in 2021, has now been elected as the Lok Sabha MP for Medinipur. In Taldangra, Arup Chakraborty left his assembly seat to represent Bankura in the national parliament.

These by-polls will be closely watched as they represent key battlegrounds for both Trinamool and the opposition parties. TMC is confident in its lineup, hoping to retain control over these assembly seats.
