Ferry ghat owner suspected of poisoning 10 monkeys with pesticide-laced bananas
Siliguri Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Tania Roy has been suspended following the release of a viral video that depicts her engaging in alleged misconduct while on duty. The footage, which surfaced on social media, reportedly shows Roy intoxicated and assaulting two minors. In response, the Siliguri Police Commissionerate acted swiftly to remove her from her position, raising significant concerns about police behavior and the implications for public safety.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening near Sri Guru Vidya Mandir School in Siliguri’s Ward No. 46. Witnesses reported that Roy, who was on patrol in a pink mobile van aimed at enhancing women’s safety, got out of the vehicle and physically confronted the two minors, a boy and a girl. Local residents witnessed the altercation and expressed their outrage, surrounding the police vehicle to voice their discontent. After the incident, Roy reportedly drove away in the patrol van.
Following the video's circulation, the Siliguri Metropolitan Police initiated an immediate investigation into Roy's conduct. Deputy Commissioner of Police Biswa Chand Thakur confirmed that the officer was removed from her role in the pink mobile unit, which was established under the direction of Commissioner C. Sudhakar to improve safety for women in the city. The quick response from the police department reflects a commitment to addressing allegations of misconduct within its ranks.
Roy had previously served as a constable at the Pradhan Nagar police station before being promoted to Assistant Sub-Inspector just months ago. The pink mobile patrol vans are intended to serve as a protective measure for women in the community. However, this incident has drawn attention to the need for more stringent measures to ensure that officers maintain professionalism while on duty.
The viral video has provoked strong reactions on social media, with many users condemning Roy's behavior as unbecoming of a police officer. Comments have ranged from expressions of disbelief to calls for her termination and punishment. BJP leader Samik Bhattacharya also weighed in, expressing shock over the incident and highlighting Roy's alleged history of intoxication while on duty.
As the investigation continues, the mother of one of the minors has formally accused Roy of misconduct and assault, demanding appropriate action. No official statement has been released by the police department regarding further measures or consequences as of Friday morning.
