Teenager found dead in Balurghat government home, Investigation into circumstances underway

The body of a 16-year-old boy was found hanging in the bathroom of a government-run home located in Danga Gram Panchayat, Balurghat. The teenager had been a resident of the facility for nearly nine years, having been brought there in 2015 after being rescued from the streets of Malda. Reports indicate that he had no identifiable address, as he was classified as a street child prior to his admission to the home. His sudden death has raised significant concerns about the safety and mental health support available to residents in such facilities.

Upon the discovery of the body, local police were alerted and arrived promptly at the scene to begin an investigation. Among those present were the Additional District Magistrate (Land and Revenue) Harish Rasid, the Chairman of the Child Welfare Committee Mandira Ray, and other officials. Initial evaluations have led investigators to consider the case as a potential suicide; however, they are not ruling out any possibilities. Police are conducting interviews with staff members and other residents to gather insights into the boy's emotional state and any recent interactions he may have had leading up to the incident.

The government home, which primarily accommodates boys under the age of 18, currently houses approximately 50 residents, including several children from Bangladesh. Investigators are meticulously reviewing CCTV footage from the facility to identify any unusual behavior or incidents that might have occurred prior to the boy’s death.
