A dangerous situation unfolded Thursday morning on the Howrah-Bardhaman chord line when a goods train unexpectedly stalled near Jhapan Danga station. The incident halted the Howrah-Bolpur Shantiniketan Express behind the stationary freight due to the automatic signaling system, avoiding a potential collision. Officials confirmed that the goods train experienced an engine malfunction, which led to it stopping suddenly on the busy line.
Passengers on the Shantiniketan Express reported panic as the train halted abruptly on the same track as the stalled goods train. Some passengers began exiting the train in fear, while others jumped onto the tracks to distance themselves from the halted carriages. The incident came during the festive season rush, with heightened passenger load, amplifying the tension among those on board.
Eastern Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer Kaushik Mitra stated that the engine failure occurred just before the goods train was to enter Jhapan Danga station. The automatic signal system in the area responded immediately, stopping the Shantiniketan Express at a safe distance behind the stalled train. Mitra emphasized that this incident was purely mechanical and that safety protocols functioned as designed, preventing any potential collision.
Railway officials clarified there was no error in the signaling system, and no other technical malfunctions were involved. The automatic signal system operated normally, confirming that there was no risk to passengers on board either train. Eastern Railway has assured travelers of continued safe operations, with technical staff working to address and prevent similar engine issues on the line.
