Speeding bus mows down pedestrian at MG Road more, driver flee
On the night of Kali Puja, TMC legislator Sukumar Mahato was attacked by party workers in Sandeshkhali, sparking concerns over rising internal factionalism within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The assault occurred as Mahato and his supporters were returning from inaugurating a Kali Puja celebration in Najat. Witnesses reported that the attack was premeditated, with Mahato's vehicle deliberately targeted as it made its way back from the event.
During the altercation, four of Mahato's followers were injured while attempting to protect him, with one individual suffering serious injuries and reported to be in critical condition. Following the incident, two suspects were arrested, both believed to be affiliated with the TMC, underscoring the alarming trend of violence among party ranks. The attack has drawn attention to accusations against Abdul Kader Molla, the deputy chief of Hategachi Panchayat and a close associate of expelled leader Sheikh Shahjahan.
Molla has publicly suggested that widespread dissatisfaction with Mahato's leadership contributed to the attack. He claimed that grievances stem from Mahato allegedly soliciting bribes for promoting workers within the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) program, leading to frustration among party workers who felt marginalized. Molla further stated that some individuals attempted to voice their concerns but were denied access to Mahato, which he believes fueled the violent confrontation.
In response to the incident, opposition leaders have characterized the attack as a symptom of deeper power struggles within the TMC rather than mere factional disputes. BJP leader Jagannath Chatterjee commented that the violence reflects ongoing tensions over the allocation of resources, particularly regarding the distribution of funds associated with Kali Puja festivities. As investigations are underway, the incident raises critical questions about party cohesion, the handling of internal conflicts, and the potential repercussions for the TMC's political landscape ahead of future elections in West Bengal.
