Anubrata Mondal, a senior leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Birbhum, has formally proposed to increase the core committee's membership from seven to fifteen members. This proposal aims to enhance the committee's effectiveness in addressing the diverse political interests and needs of the entire Birbhum district. Mondal emphasized the importance of a larger committee, stating, “The core committee is not a new concept. When I was the district president, we had an effective committee that tackled various issues faced by the region.”
Currently, the core committee has been criticized for its heavy focus on the Bolpur area, which some party members argue limits the representation of other vital regions within Birbhum. Mondal expressed that the existing committee structure does not adequately reflect the district's demographics or political landscape. He stated, “The committee has become largely Bolpur-centric, so it’s essential to broaden its representation across the entire district.” By proposing this expansion, Mondal aims to ensure that voices from all corners of Birbhum are heard and represented in party decisions.
To move forward with his proposal, Mondal plans to convene discussions with the current core committee members. This step will involve gathering their feedback and building consensus around the proposed changes before formally presenting the initiative to the TMC's higher leadership, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Engaging the committee members early in the process is intended to foster a collaborative approach to leadership restructuring within the party.
The backdrop of Mondal's proposal is his recent return from Tihar jail, where he was held in connection with legal issues, including charges related to corruption. His return has reignited his active participation in local politics, and this push for committee expansion is seen as part of his strategy to regain influence within the party and strengthen its grassroots connections. As the TMC prepares for future elections, the outcome of Mondal’s proposal could play a crucial role in shaping the party's organizational dynamics and its effectiveness in addressing constituents needs across Birbhum.
