Cracks appear in homes as explosions and tremors hit Kerala's village

Residents of Anakkallu village in Kerala's Malappuram district have reported a series of loud explosions and tremors on October 17, 18, and 29, causing significant concern within the community. The explosions, which occurred intermittently, were accompanied by mild tremors that resulted in visible cracks in several homes. Local authorities received numerous reports from residents who described the sounds as similar to mining blasts, prompting urgent investigations into the incidents.

In response to these reports, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) activated local disaster response teams to assess the situation. A detailed investigation was conducted by the district's geologist, who worked alongside experts from the groundwater department and a risk analyst. The goal was to determine the source of the explosions and evaluate any potential risks to the residents and their properties.

Preliminary findings indicated that the loud noises were generated by geological activity beneath the surface, specifically from the movement of rocks. The friction and breaking of these rocks created vibrations that resembled seismic activity. Scientists noted that such phenomena can occur due to fluctuations in groundwater levels or changes in air pressure, which can lead to the fragmentation of rock formations.

KSDMA officials reported that the buildings affected by these events were predominantly older structures that may not have been constructed to endure seismic events or geological shifts. In light of safety concerns, approximately 300 residents were evacuated to designated safe areas. Ongoing assessments of structural damage are being conducted to determine the extent of repairs required.

This series of incidents in Anakkallu reflects a broader trend of geological disturbances noted in various regions of Kerala. Previous reports of similar explosions and tremors have been documented, highlighting the need for continuous monitoring of geological conditions in the area. The KSDMA has encouraged residents to remain vigilant and has assured them that these occurrences, while unsettling, are often part of natural geological processes.
