Posters claim missing Bengal's Basirhat MLA Rafiqul Islam spark political tensions

Posters claiming that Basirhat North MLA Rafiqul Islam is missing have surfaced across various locations in his constituency, including Murarishaha Chowmatha and near his residence and office. The posters, which feature a black-and-white image of the MLA, include his name and a phone number for individuals with information regarding his whereabouts. They are attributed to the Trinamool Congress Respect Committee, a faction within the ruling Trinamool Congress party.

The appearance of these posters has led to a wave of concern and speculation among local residents. Many community members have expressed their frustration over Islam's limited visibility and engagement in local activities, particularly following his absence from a recent Bijoya Sammelan organized by the Trinamool Congress near his home on October 30. The event was intended to strengthen community ties and celebrate the festive season, raising questions about the MLA's commitment to his constituents.

In response to the situation, local political leaders have voiced differing opinions on the motivations behind the poster campaign. Escander Gazi, president of the Trinamool block in Hasnabad, has accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM of orchestrating the distribution of the posters as part of a broader strategy to exploit internal dissatisfaction within the Trinamool. He noted that Rafiqul Islam’s previous affiliation with the CPM might be fueling these actions, suggesting that the opposition seeks to undermine his position in the community.

On the other hand, representatives from the CPM have rejected claims that the posters reflect any internal conflict within the Trinamool Congress. Former CPM district committee member Subid Ali Gazi stated that the incident highlights ongoing issues within the ruling party, particularly as the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency approaches by-elections. He asserted that the CPM does not engage in such political maneuvers, framing the posters as a reflection of the Trinamool's challenges rather than an attack from the opposition.
