Nowshad Siddiqui, the Indian Secular Front (ISF) MLA for Bhangar, has made significant allegations against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) concerning the administration of the housing scheme in the area. During a public outreach program held on Sunday in the Fulbari locality of South 24 Parganas, Siddiqui claimed that individuals applying for housing assistance under the state government’s scheme are being asked to pay bribes of ₹20,000 to secure their allotted houses. He highlighted that reports indicate some beneficiaries of the scheme already own concrete houses, which he argues undermines the program's objective of providing housing to the economically disadvantaged.
The West Bengal housing scheme is part of the government's broader initiative, which aims to provide permanent housing to families living in precarious conditions or informal settlements. The initiative, launched in response to a significant housing deficit in the state, seeks to ensure that marginalized communities receive adequate shelter. Under this program, eligible families are expected to meet specific criteria to qualify for assistance, including income limits and housing status.
In reaction to Siddiqui's accusations, TMC leader Ahsan Mollah stated that the allegations lack merit and are not supported by evidence. He emphasized that the TMC government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has implemented clear guidelines that disallow individuals with existing permanent homes from receiving benefits under the housing scheme. Mollah referred to previous statements made by party officials, including MLA Shaukat Mollah and MP Sayani Ghosh, who reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring that housing assistance is directed exclusively to those in need.
Siddiqui's allegations have sparked discussions among residents of Bhangar about the integrity and transparency of the housing scheme's implementation. Many local residents have expressed concerns about potential corruption and the misallocation of housing resources, which are intended to support the most vulnerable populations. The TMC has reiterated its commitment to addressing these concerns, stating that all beneficiaries are subject to thorough verification processes to ensure compliance with eligibility criteria.
