Canadian Police assault Hindu devotees during protest at temple amid Khalistani tensions

A clash occurred at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton, Ontario, involving Canadian police and Hindu devotees protesting an alleged attack on their temple by individuals identifying as Khalistani supporters. This protest was triggered by a prior incident where a mob reportedly stormed the temple, leading to assaults on worshippers. The Canadian media reported that the protesters were waving Indian flags during their demonstration, which was met with a heavy police presence.

Videos circulated on social media showed police officers engaging with the protesters, with some footage depicting an officer striking a protester multiple times. Eyewitness accounts described an aggressive response from law enforcement, including charges at the crowd. The woman who filmed one of the videos can be heard accusing officers of assaulting the protesters. The incident escalated tensions between the Hindu community and law enforcement, with protesters expressing outrage over the police’s handling of the situation.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the violence in a statement posted on social media, emphasizing that “the acts of violence at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton today are unacceptable.” He reaffirmed that every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely. Trudeau also acknowledged the rapid response of law enforcement, stating that it was crucial in protecting the community during the incident.

The Indian embassy in Canada condemned the attack, labeling it a premeditated effort by “anti-India elements” and expressing disappointment over the police’s lack of action during the assaults. The embassy noted similar disruptions aimed at Hindu temples in other Canadian cities, including Surrey and Vancouver, in the days leading up to the protest. Nayan Bramhabhatt, a priest at the temple, criticized the local police for their inadequate security measures and for failing to arrest anyone involved in the assaults, leading to heightened fear within the community regarding their safety while attending religious services.

In the aftermath of the clashes, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown announced intentions to propose a motion to the city council aimed at prohibiting protests at places of worship, arguing that such locations should remain free from violence and intimidation. He stated that he would ask the City solicitor to examine the legality of such a by-law in the upcoming council meeting.
