North Kolkata filtered water supply to be disrupted on Dec 16-17 due to Tallah Pump repairs
An 18-year-old Indian youth, Bhajan Barman, was shot in the arm by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel on the night of November 4, 2024, while allegedly attempting to cross the barbed wire fence into Bangladesh at the Dangbiral border near the Ghumsi Border Outpost (BOP) in West Bengal. The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Patiram police station, which is located in the Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal.
Witness accounts suggest that Barman was confronted by a patrol of BSF troops from the 57th battalion, who were stationed at the border to prevent illegal crossings. The BSF personnel reportedly instructed him to stop; however, he continued to advance towards the border. According to BSF protocols, troops are authorized to use firearms in life-threatening situations or to prevent unlawful border crossings. However, the exact circumstances that led to the decision to fire upon Barman are currently unclear.
Following the incident, Barman was rushed to Balurghat Super Specialty Hospital, where medical personnel reported that he sustained a single gunshot wound to his right arm. His condition was classified as serious, prompting immediate medical intervention. The hospital administration confirmed that he underwent surgery and is currently being monitored in the intensive care unit (ICU). BSF personnel have been deployed at the hospital to ensure security and assist with any necessary administrative procedures.
The BSF and local police are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the shooting. This includes collecting statements from witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from the area. The investigation aims to determine whether the use of force was justified under the circumstances and to evaluate the adherence to the BSF's standard operating procedures regarding engagement with individuals attempting to cross the border.
