A suicide attempt at Shobhabazar station on the Dum Dum to New Garia metro route caused significant disruption to metro services today at 12:45 PM. The incident took place when a man jumped onto the tracks just as a metro train was entering the station. The sudden action led to an immediate halt in services on the down line, with several trains delayed and diverted to alternate routes. Services between Dakshineswar and Dum Dum, and between Central and Rabindra Sarobar, continued unaffected. However, the down line remained closed for around 40 minutes, causing widespread delays and inconvenience to passengers.
Kolkata Metro officials acted promptly to manage the situation, initiating a rescue operation. The third rail was de-energized, and technical staff, along with other metro personnel, were deployed to the scene. The incident disrupted services for nearly an hour, and during this time, passengers faced overcrowding on platforms as metro services resumed on alternate routes. Rescue operations continued under the supervision of local authorities and medical staff, ensuring safety while recovering the individual from the tracks.
The individual was finally retrieved from the tracks around 1:30 PM and was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel. His identity remains unknown, and the rail police are working to trace the person’s details and understand the cause of the incident. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the suicide attempt, but no specific details have been confirmed.
