Ajaz Hossain, a water businessman from Hatiara East Para in New Town, was arrested by the Eco Park police on Friday night for allegedly selling counterfeit bottled water. Hossain, who operated a water plant in the area, was accused of using fake brand stickers to sell water under the guise of a well-known bottled water company. The arrest followed several complaints lodged against him, prompting a detailed investigation by the police. Hossain was found to have been using counterfeit labels to mislead consumers into purchasing substandard water at premium prices.
Following the arrest, Eco Park police conducted a raid at Hossain's water plant in Hatiara East Para, where they discovered a large stock of counterfeit water jar stickers. In addition to the stickers, the police seized a vehicle connected to the operation, believed to have been used for the distribution of the fake water. The raid revealed that Hossain had been operating the fraudulent business for several months, targeting unsuspecting customers by presenting his water as a legitimate branded product.
Police officials have confirmed that Hossain's actions could pose significant health risks to consumers, as counterfeit bottled water may not meet safety and quality standards. Hossain has been charged with fraud, misrepresentation, and violations related to consumer protection laws. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether other individuals were involved in the operation or if there are links to a larger network of counterfeit bottled water businesses in the region. Hossain is set to be presented in Barasat Court today, where legal proceedings will continue.
