At the ongoing “Droh Gallery” protest exhibition at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, junior doctors found a statue of Abhaya, the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder victim, shattered.
The protest display, set up to raise awareness and demand justice, featured two statues—one in a doctor's uniform and the other in a saree—representing the victim. While the exhibit remained intact until Saturday night, the doctors discovered the saree-clad statue face down and damaged the following morning.
A doctor from the exhibition explained, “The statues were fine when we left last night. We don’t know if the damage was accidental or intentional.” Although junior doctors noticed the incident immediately, they chose not to file a police complaint, and by Sunday evening, both statues were removed from the gallery.
The ongoing protests at RG Kar Medical College arose after the tragic incident three months prior involving the death of a female doctor at the facility. This protest in the form of an exhibition aims to call attention to security concerns within medical institutions and demand a safer working environment for medical students and staff.
The damaged statue, representing the victim, was intended as a symbolic display to raise awareness of safety for healthcare professionals.
